Following Week – Fairway Woods Bunkers (register for this session)
Last week we had a session on chipping. A Chip is a “Swing” back and through generally below waist height, without wrist hinge. Distance could be up to 50m.
You can chip with any of your clubs to loft the ball or roll the ball along the ground.
The more you can play the ball on the ground, the smaller the swing and energy required to play the shot. When walking towards your intended chip. Decide if you can chip and run the ball, in this case there would be fairway length grass and green between yourself and the flag. Or Loft the ball, in this case the ball maybe sitting in longer grass or you may have rough or a bunker between yourself and the flag. Deciding on the right shot will give you the best chance of chipping the ball close.
As we get nearer to Xmas, don’t forget “Golf Lesson Gift Vouchers” are a great gift for any golfer. 30 Minute Sessions $70.00 Package of x5, 30 Minute Sessions $300.00 Sessions on the Driving Range, Short Game and On Course. Email me your requirements.
The Rules of Golf can get complex, especially when they get passed from player to player. The Rules can end up being a “Monkey Chain”, far from the true ruling. There is also this poor perception that good players know the rules better?
Knowing a ruling is more about knowing where to find the information. You can then proceed with confidence.
The Rules of Golf App has made finding the correct rulings so much easier. If you haven’t already, download this App. Go to the “Players Rule Finder” page. Each are of the golf course is clearly defined and a drop down will lead you straight to your situation. Clear diagrams and videos will give you everything you need.
In the PlayStore or Apple Store search Rules of Golf. Install this page.

Good afternoon
Sessions This Week --- Thursday 28th November. 9:15am start, Iron Shots Friday 29th November, 9:15am start, Bunkers (please register to attend)
Following Week – Chipping Putting
Last week we had a session on fairway woods. We described this as fairway clubs, because not everyone gets their maximum distance from a fairway wood! All golfers are different and you need to find your sweet spot when it comes to getting distance from your fairway shots. A fairway wood has a long shaft and sometimes not enough loft to generate distance. A hybrid is shorter, perhaps with more control. There are Pros and Cons. The longer the club, potentially more distance. However, less control and timing.
If you’re after more distance on the fairway, make an appointment before Christmas.

Sessions This Week --- Thursday 21st November , 9:15am start, Fairway Woods Friday 22nd November, NO SESSION
Following Week – Thursday, Iron Shots Friday, Bunker Shots (please register for this session limited space)
Last week we had a session on Chipping. The lower you are able to play the shot the smaller the swing and safer the result. Eg, a chip and run #7 iron is easier than a lofted Sand Wedge from the same distance.
As you approach your ball assess the shot. Is the ball sitting in the rough or fairway? Do you need to carry any rough, or bunker? Any rough in your line generally means you’ll need to loft the ball. Fairway grass between you and the flag, chip and run or putt the ball!

Good morning Sessions This Week --- Thursday 14th November , 9:15am start, Hybrids/Rescue Clubs Friday 15th November, 9:15am start, Chipping
Following Week – Thursday only, Fairway Woods
Last week we had a session on irons. If you find these clubs difficult? Then consider swapping some out for Hybrids! #7,#6,#5 irons tend to fly low and don’t stop on the green. The larger head of a hybrid will cover this distance and launch the ball higher. It wouldn’t be unusual to take out x2 irons and replace them with one hybrid. As pictured the larger flatter heads of hybrids and fairway woods (compared to slim irons) will launch the ball higher, this also means straighter shots! We have a range of demo clubs to help you in this area. Get in touch.

Good morning Sessions This Week --- Thursday 7th November, 9:15am start, Iron Shots Friday 8th November, 9:15am start, Drivers Following Week – Hybrids/Rescue Clubs Chipping New Zealand Golf Rankings has just released the latest list of New Zealands Top 40 Golf Courses. Canterbury is represented well amongst the list with 6 courses. As we know we are very spoilt for choice of courses. The x2 new courses at Te Arai, South and North further elevate NZ as a golfing destination.
Good afternoon Sessions This Week --- Thursday 31st October, 9:15am start, Pitching Friday 1st November, 9:15am start, Bunkers (please register, limited space) Following Week – Iron Shots Drivers Last week we had a session on Putting. One of the simplest training aids is using this metal rail (watch video). It will give you exact feedback to if you are starting the ball on the correct line. Self correct your putting swing as you go, working up the rail to increase the difficulty.
Running the ball along the 1m rail would produce a putt that hits the hole at over 5m! Perfect for home practice on any floor surface, you don’t need a hole.
Bernard Langer is a member of the Golf Hall of Fame. Won x2 Masters titles. 123 Professional wins throughout his career. The most successful player on the Champions Tour with 12 majors.
I have a supply of these putting rails if you would like one. $20.00 will shave multiple shots off your score! Have a great week. Jason

Good morning Sessions This Week --- Thursday 24th October, 9:15am start, Pitching Friday 25th October, 9:15am start, Putting Following Week – Drivers Bunkers (Please register for this session, limited space)
Last week we had a chipping session. Set Up is a massive part of this shot. Stand in close to the ball, like a putting set up. Stand the shaft up, like a putter. Lean weight and shaft to the target side, and stay there.
As pictured here. Make a “Y shape” between your arms and the club at set up. Maintain this throughout the swing into impact. Don’t let the wrists break down. Have a great week. Jason

Good Afternoon Sessions This Week --- Thursday 10th October, 9:15am start, Iron Shots Friday 11th October, 9:15am start, Bunkers (A few spots remaining, please register)
Following Week – Chipping Fairway Woods Last week we had a session on Drivers. You’ll see on the attached pic, 1. The stance is wider with the driver. 2. Ball position is towards the front foot. With these set up changes the ball is correctly struck on the upswing. Notice how the top half of the body for a driver is tilted behind the ball.
Compared to the iron where we want to descend on the ball. The top half of the body is over the ball. Ball position more centered.
Swing both the iron and the driver the same, making the above x2 set up changes.
Following Week – Irons Bunkers (Fri 11th , please register to attend)
Last week we had a session on hybrids. These clubs came in to the market 20+ years ago as a long iron replacement (no more #1, #2, #3 irons). Hybrids are becoming more common in higher lofts #5,6,7,8,9 hybrid.
Some facts about hybrids! Hybrids will help you get more stopping power onto a green as the ball is landing steeper. A higher flight also keeps the ball straighter. Hybrids are also more forgiving on mishit shots. You can cover x2 iron distances with one hybrid in the bag (less clubs) So, if you want to make the game easier? Stack your bag with a few more hybrids and ditch some irons that you don’t really like. We have demo clubs available. Come and have a chat about what’s right for you.
Last week we had a session on Bunkers. Looking at the attached Pic, notice, Weight is down and into the left side after impact. Set up with plenty of knee flex, slightly to the left side. The right arm after follow through is long and still low (cut the legs off the ball) The clubface after impact stays pointing to the sky (unlike a normal swing) Plenty of sand, splash the sand out of the bunker
Last week we had a session on putting. A useful weapon to your game is to have some experience hitting long putts (20m-40m). Here’s a couple of practice Tips. Make your swing bigger rather than hitting the ball harder. Widen your stance a little, keep knees still. Feel the swing size looking at half the distance then add on the extra to the hole.
Just a little practice will give you confidence and another option from off the green, particularly as the fairways dry out. Another thought. When 20m+ from the hole, getting down in 2 is a bonus for most players. Make it no more than 3 shots by using the long putt.

Time Saver Tips on the Golf Course. A couple of simple habits to get into. Before going to the 1st tee make sure you have in your pocket what you’ll need for the round, Tees, pitch mark repairer and ball marker The ball you’re going to use Scorecard and pencil Also Take the headcover off the driver, leave it in the car or golf bag for the round. When you get to each tee you can be ready to play and then move to your ball faster. Also When loading your clubs in the car, take the driver out and store it along side your bag. A lot of drivers get broken because car boots aren't quite wide enough to fit a bag with the driver sticking out..

Good afternoon Sessions This Week --- Thursday 29th August, 9:15am start, Fairway Woods Friday 30th August, 9:15am start, Pitching
Following Week – Drivers and Iron Shots Last week we had a session on Putting. We know this is a super important part of the game but often overlooked to practice. If you want to lower your scores quickly? Spend some time on the putting green.
How to practice. Distance control is key. In practice don’t putt to a hole. Instead line up 5 balls. Hit the first one a few paces across the green, hit the next ball quickly a touch further than the first. Repeat with the 5 balls so they are staggered across the green. Repeat this a few times. Then we can reverse the drill. Putt the first ball a long distance then the next putt shorter..
Remember , mid to long range putting, success isn’t holing the putt, its taking the stress out of the 2nd putt. Have a great week. Jason

Following Week – Fairway Woods and Pitching
Last week we had a session on Driver Shots. To help you get more distance, remember to tee the ball so half the ball is above the top of the clubface. Position the ball off your front big toe, slightly wider stance with more shoulder tilt (front shoulder up).
These are all important changes to your set up. See the difference below between the driver set up and an iron set up. Have a great week, bring on Spring! Jason

Good afternoon Sessions This Week --- Friday 16th August Only, 9:15am start No Session Thursday 15th.
Following Week – Putting and Hybrids
Last week we had a session on iron shots. Consider the number of irons you carry in your bag. Most golfers could get away with less clubs. Particularly the mid to longer irons (#7,#6,#5 iron), think about replacing these with 1 or 2 hybrids. Hybrids fly higher and will cover the same distance. A higher ball flight will go straighter and give you stopping power on a green, that’s more fun!

Sessions this Week Thursday 18th July - Iron Shots, 9:15am start Friday 19th July – Drivers, 9:15am start
Next week 22nd,24th July, Hybrids and Putting
Last week we covered a session on “Pitching” The difference between a “Chip” and a “Pitch” You can chip or pitch with any club in your bag.
The shots refer to the type of swing you use. A chip is a swing typically back and through without wrist hinge. Knee height backswing to knee height follow through or waist height back and through. A Pitch is a longer swing with a little wrist hinge on the backswing. More chest and arms to the target to follow through. These 2 different swings will create different distances with the same club.
A good golf swing will only find its target if its aimed correctly. Note how the feet and shoulder line Don't aim at the target. Parallel left (right handed golfer)

Todays Tip Pictured you'll see a set up position for an iron and Driver Shot. Iron. When you play this shot we're wanting to strike the ball on the downswing, divot after the ball. Position your head and chest in line with the ball, stance is a little narrower. Driver. Really important for adding distance, collect the ball on the upswing. Position your head and chest slightly behind the ball, wider stance, ball position forward.
For all your golf and equipment needs, I look forward to seeing you soon. Jason

Next week Thursday Only Iron Shots. A really good tip for your Putting.
I think one of the most important shots to lowering your score is being able to "Lag Putt". This is rolling a medium to long length putt within a couple of feet of the hole. When you do your practice swings, do this from the side so you can see the whole length of the putt. Look at the line (not your putter) while swinging the putter. Then without too much delay, step up and hit the putt. I'm sure you'll make the right size swing to suit the distance by following this quick routine.
Have a great week. Jason

I had a good report back from a client today. We had a putting session during the week and made a couple of set up changes. He's been shooting in the low 90's recently. Number of putts per round 38-41. Today he shot 77 with 31 putts! When he told me I could tell his putting performance greatly affected his long game confidence. He felt great about his whole game. If you're keen to attend the putting session on Friday, send me a quick email. Look forward to seeing you soon. Good golfing Jason

Fridays upcoming Fairway Wood session. In previous sessions we've talked about getting optimum distance. For this we need the right trajectory, this is often a higher flight than you'd think. Do you find that your #5 or #7 wood goes as far if not further than a #3 wood? The longer the club doesn't always mean more distance! Give this an experiment next week by hitting a few shots with each of your fairway woods, lets see which one gives the best results.

We're all feeling some NZ pride with Lydia Kos fight back to win the Bronze Medal! As she said following the third round "you never know until the last putt drops on the last hole" Drawing inspiration from Minjee Lees win at the Evian last month where she was 10 shots off the lead and came back to win. Lydia dedicated her medal to her Grandmother who passed away last week. Another story from the tournament was 4th placed Indian player Aditi Ashok, ranked 200th in the world. After a recent bout of Covid had lost strength and 15 yards distance off the tee. She ranked last in the field for driving but first in putting! Also with the putter, Cameron Smith playing in the FedEx St Jude Invitational this week, tied the PGA Tour record for the lowest amount of putts in a round. On route to an 8 under 62 Cameron took just 18 putts during his round! 12 players have now matched this on Tour!
Have a great week ahead. Jason

This weeks Tip. Body rotation is a good thing, but too much of it presents its own set of issues depending on your age. Junior golfers can twist their body more easily, so they should use more of a PGA Tour setup: wider stance with the trail foot more pigeon-toed to prevent overturning on the backswing.
Older golfers need all the turn they can get! Opt for the setup you see on the PGA Tour Champions: narrow stance with both feet flared outward. Two proven rotation boosters.
Don't forget to get your entries in for the "Pick the Winner Competition" of this weeks Open Championship. Just reply on separate email with the player you think will win.
Pick the Winner of The Open Championship and WIN!!! FREE TO ENTER!!!
BE IN TO WIN!!! FREE TO ENTER!!!
Simply pick the tournament winner of this years “Open Championship” beginning on July 15th at Royal St George’s Golf Course. WIN a dozen Callaway Chrome Soft balls.
Conditions. One entry per person. If there is more than 1 winner the balls will be divided, you'll win at least a sleeve of 3 balls. Entries must be received by separate email to jason@jtgolf.co.nz Entries must be received before round 1 begins.
Here's a tip on how to make every green bigger! A ball with a soft cover (premium ball such as the Callaway Chrome Soft or Titleist Pro V) will spin more therefore it will stop faster when approaching the green. More spin reduces the chance of the ball racing through the back of the green. So by using a soft covered ball you'll make every green a bigger target.
If you'd like to discuss improving your game this season, just get in touch. Good golfing Jason

QUALITY ADVICE Your golf game and equipment needs are important. My teaching style works with what you’ve got. Being able to take what you’ve learnt and apply it on the golf course straight away is more fun. Equipment is changing all the time. Will the latest technology help you? My philosophy is the fewer clubs you can carry to do the job the less confusing the game will be
SAFETY During this time I'll continue under the guidelines of Level 2. Social distancing and basic hygiene practices must be adhered to. There will be a sign in Contact Tracing Register available that all clients must complete including arrival and exit times please.
I'm looking forward to seeing you and helping with your game wherever I can.
Brent, has been practicing chipping into an upside down umbrella on his back lawn. He keeps score of how many he gets in from different spots. Dave and Jo, cut out some golf holes on their property, and did a really good job. They even named their course the Corona Country Club – I love it!
Mark, on a 13 handicap, had a great run, narrowly missing a hole-in-one and tapped in for a birdie. Then followed up the next hole with another birdie! All other players had highlights over the 2 Days. I really enjoy hearing comments like “I would never have thought to play that shot!”, when the ball ends up close to the hole.

COVID-19 Response and Ministry of Health Mental Wellbeing Advice.
COVID-19 Response and Ministry of Health Guidelines. Hello All Just to inform you around extra hygiene steps I will be taking for delivery of coaching at various sites. This includes making sure all provided golf equipment and surfaces are cleaned regularly and there will be wipes available during each session.
Basic hygiene measures are the most important way to stop the spread of infections, including the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Basic hygiene measures include: Hand hygiene – that is, washing hands regularly with soap and water, or cleansing with hand sanitiser Staying at home if you are sick Coughing or sneezing into a tissue or your elbow and then performing hand hygiene cleaning surfaces regularly.
Also remember that at this time: Your Mental Wellbeing is important. Golf can provide us with an environment where we can experience a sense of normality in an open space. Social distancing is possible during coaching and in a playing situation..
Tips for managing your own Mental Wellbeing: Spend time in places that feel safe and comfortable as much as possible. Tell yourself that how you are feeling is a normal reaction and will pass – it is nothing to be afraid of. Reach out to your usual supports – family and wh?nau, friends and workmates. Sharing how we feel and offering support to others is important. Keep to usual routines – mealtimes, bedtime, exercise and so on. Keep active – going to work, doing usual leisure activities and seeing friends can improve general wellbeing and help distract from distressing feelings. However, if over days and weeks your distress or stress symptoms are escalating or you feel you are not coping, help and professional support is available.
If you are in self-isolation, call Healthline first (0800 611 116). Otherwise, your GP is a good starting point. For support with grief, anxiety, distress or mental wellbeing, you can call or text 1737 to talk with a trained counsellor for free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How about the story this week of Alex Ross. Playing in the Dogwood Invitational. After starting with rounds of 75, 73 he was looking like missing the cut. The 3rd round was part of 36 holes of play that day and with 10 minutes for lunch Alex headed for the tee for his 2nd round. After joking with the starter about what the course record was (60). Alex burned it around in a record score of 57!!, 15 under par. He went on to finish in a tie for 11th with rounds of 75,73,57,70. http://www.amateurgolf.com/golf-tournament-news/23966/For-Alex-Ross--lights-out-57-ends-a-long-day-at-the-Dogwood

Amelia Garvey, back on the team at the University of Southern California
Amelia has played some great golf this year for the University of Southern California. Her team is ranked number 1 in the USA! With only 5 spots available on the team the pressure to play well and maintain a spot is immense. Amelia has improved her National Ranking to 23rd but still fighting for her spot on a very talented USC team. Amelia recently posted this report on her ups and downs as a College Golfer.
Go to: www.kaiapoigolf.co.nz Click Amelia on the homepage.
This week Amelia is playing in the NCAA Division 1 Championship. (She fought her way back onto the team after a 36 hole match with one of her team mates, winning with a birdie on the 38th hole!) Playing at number 5 for USC Amelia has carded the best score on her team over 3 rounds and is currently within the top 10 in the individual standings. Some highlights from this week, Round 1. Amelia had 2 eagles. One was on a par 4 where she drove the green and 1 putted. Round 2. Played the front 9 holes in 6 under par, unfortunately 6 over on the back 9. Round 3. Currently in a tie for 7th overall on +2 for the tournament, 132 players in the field. USC sit 3rd overall with the top 8 teams advancing to match play.
You can keep track of all college golf results www.golfstat.com Also Tom Whitaker is doing a great job of posting Amelia's results on the Kaiapoi Golf Club website.
Tom and myself with the support of the Kaiapoi Golf Club started the junior program there in 2008. Amelia was one of the youngest at just 8 years old. It has been with great pride along with Amelia's family, the members at Kaiapoi and NZ Golf to watch her strive for her long term goal to play the LPGA Tour.
Congratulations to the winners of "Pick the Winner of the PGA Championship" competition
Good evening all. A closer than expected finish to the PGA Championship yesterday. Brooks Koepka entering the back nine with a 6 shot lead soon saw this reduced to just 1 with a few holes to go. Dustin Johnson said it before the final round "we're going to need some help from Brooks if anyone is going to catch him". Well Brooks did give the rest of the field some help making bogey on 5 of the last 8 holes, just holding on for a 2 shot victory.
The winners of the "Pick the Winner" competition are, Rob H, Susan T, Ian C, Wayne W, Diana T, Stuart R, Mike G, Dermot M
There will be another chance to win, the US Open at Pebble Beach tees off next month.
LOWER YOUR SCORE!!! BOOK IN NOW We all know that putting is the secret to unlocking a good score. Danny Lee had just 21 putts in his opening round of 64 at the PGA Championship. When was the last time you had a putting round in the 20's? So how can you lower scores with better putting? Heres a plan I'll help you with. 1. Technique, start with solid fundamentals. 2. A putter that fits you properly (new or changes to your existing putter) 3. A practice plan that engages you and measures progress. Your practice plan can be worked on at the golf course and at home. What a great way to benefit from the winter months! Package Includes: 1 x 1 hour Kick Start Session 1 x 30 Check Up Session Special Price $150.00
(This is a fantastic offer and is limited to the first 10 bookings. Buy for yourself or as a Gift Voucher. Sessions held at the Christchurch Golf Club. Includes practice notes)

If you've gone Tiger crazy since the last Major, how about an American punter who bet $85,000 on Tiger to win The Masters. He picked up $1.19m. He has now placed a $100,000 bet on Tiger to not only win this week but to win the Grand Slam and take Jack Nicklaus record. $10million collect.
I've had some of my golfers having "Great Moments" over the past couple of weeks. A personal best breaking 100 for the first time! Also After a lifetime in the game a gentleman shot better than his age for the first time!
With the winter months coming on it's still a good time to work on your game. The Driving Range at the Christchurch Golf Club is under cover and has flood lighting for lessons. Good morning all Whether you are a Tiger fan or not, today is a fantastic day for golf! Tiger proved today how hard work and patience have brought him back to the top of the game. Now only 3 Majors behind Jack's record of 18, sounds a lot less than 4 behind!
Prior to the tournament many of you entered my"Pick the Winner" competition. I had a really good response and never before has one player received so many votes. Rory had more than 1/3 of your support! Also never before (when Tigers been in the field) has he received zero votes! So, I get to keep my golf balls for another month until the PGA Championship when you have another chance.
Be inspired by this win. You can take your game to the next level by making your weaknesses strengths. Tiger has driven the ball poorly most of his career but this year has put the ball in play more often. His course management was outstanding this week, making par is a good result most of the time. If you're a mid handicap player, then making bogey most of the time isn't a bad score, avoid the doubles. If you're having more than 32 putts in a round? That's far too many.
Whatever your problem area let's get your technique right and a practice plan in place. Get in touch and we'll make 2019 your year for golf!

Here's a tip on how to make every green bigger!. Also Remember the Driving Range at the Christchurch Golf Club is now floodlit for lessons during winter months. Give me a call and we can make bad that bad shot in your game a strength!
Too many golfers carry clubs in their bags they very rarely use and then don’t have clubs they’d use on at least a third of the holes (if they were in the bag). Most golfers also use a putter that has a shaft length that was probably never validated as being the right length for them. That makes the game harder than it needs to be.

"WIN" 1 Dozen Chrome Soft Callaway Balls - Just pick the winner of this years Masters
Yes the Masters tees off around midnight on Thursday. BE IN TO WIN!!! Simply pick the tournament winner of this years Masters and WIN a dozen Callaway Chrome Soft X balls. Conditions. One entry per person. If there is more than 1 winner the balls will be divided, you'll win at least a sleeve of 3 balls. Entries must be received by separate email to jason@jtgolf.co.nz All entries must be received before round 1 begins.
Here's a tip on how to make every green bigger!. Also Remember the driving range at the Christchurch Golf Club is now floodlit for lessons only. If you'd like to discuss how I can help you improve your game this season, just get in touch.
NZ Golf "PGA Community Coach of the Year" Finalist 2017
During the past 12 months I've continued to build on relationships within the golf community. As a freelance P.G.A Professional based at the Christchurch Golf Club (Shirley) I have the flexibility to visit rural Clubs, schools and organisations in the area, including: The Kaiapoi Golf Club Hagley Golf Club Methven Golf Club Akaroa Golf Club
For several years I've assisted the Special Olympics group and worked with local schools at beginner through to NCEA level. I enjoy travelling to different locations and meeting the needs of the students I teach.
In early January I took part in my 11th Summer School. Each year I've had the pleasure of meeting a great bunch of people from all over NZ. This year 6 (group size 11) players returned from the class of 2008. The golf classes consisted of a 1 Day Beginners course followed by a 3 Day Intermediate course (pictured). As usual the Methven Golf Club presented the course in beautiful condition, thank you Barry for all you do to promote golf in the area. The Summer School is held in the 2nd week of January each year. If your looking to learn a new skill or craft visit the website for all the details.
Amelia Garvey Receives the 2018 Lydia Ko Scholarship
19/01/2018 (www.golf.co.nz) In partnership with Lydia Ko, New Zealand Golf is pleased to announce the two recipients of the 2018 Lydia Ko Scholarship with Amelia Garvey and Rose Zheng travelling to Scottsdale in Phoenix, Arizona next week for the experience of a lifetime. The two will spend time with the former world number one at PXG’s home base where Bob Parsons has kindly opened the doors to allow them to train and play at one of the most exclusive golfing establishments in the world.
The motivation behind the scholarship, which will take place from 25-27 of January, was so Ko could give back to the game by inspiring the next generation of females to strive for the top to see what it takes to get there and help grow the number of New Zealanders competing with her on the LPGA Tour.
Ko is excited at the opportunity to host Garvey and Zheng and proud to be able to provide support back to females in golf to show recognition of the support she received along her phenomenal journey.
“I received support from so many people as I grew up and I’m proud to be able to give something back,” said Ko.
“I am really pleased to be able to work with New Zealand Golf and use the scholarship with the intention to help the next wave of young golfers rise and compete on the LPGA Tour."
Through the Lydia Ko Scholarship, both New Zealand Golf and Ko hope to attract more interest from the emerging talent within the women’s game.
Last year the recipients of the scholarship were Alanna Campbell and Momoka Kobori who have both taken up scholarships to Iowa State University and Pepperdine University respectively.
After returning home for the newest LPGA Tour event, the McKayson New Zealand Women’s Open, the ‘Ko-effect’ was in full swing. Many young fans came to Windross Farm Golf Club to see our best ever in their own backyard as she continues to give back to the game in more ways than one by bringing the world’s biggest tour to New Zealand. The Callaway range of "Epic" equipment is really dominating the market, and its on performance? If you feel like your getting left behind for distance and consistency? Give me a call and we can assess what's in your bag.
My philosophy when fitting clubs is, "the least amount of clubs in the bag to do the job, the better".
I use FlightScope radar technology to confirm the right fit for you and if your purchasing particularly a new driver, dialling in the correct launch, spin, land angle (for run out), head and shaft type is vital for getting the most out of your spend.
So whatever your swing speed or handicap? Come and experience why some of the seniors on Tour are hitting it further than they ever have!
Here's the latest media release from Marc Leishmans win over the weekend at the BMW Championship.
" Also in the bag was a Callaway Steelhead XR 7-Wood, which he used to fantastic effect, having introduced it to his bag at the Dell Technologies Championship. Leishman favours the gapping that it provided him and the high launch, soft landing ball flight. Making 29 birdies during the week, including 10 on Day One alone, Leishman was also hot with his Odyssey Versa #1W Putter, as he compiled rounds of 62, 64, 68 and 67 for a 23-under winning total."
What’s in the Bag – Marc Leishman Driver: Callaway GBB Epic (9°) Fairway Woods: Callaway GBB Epic (15°), Callaway Steelhead XR (21°) Irons: Callaway Apex UT (3), Callaway Apex Pro '16 (4-PW) Wedge: Callaway Mack Daddy Forged (54°) Putter: Odyssey Versa #1W Black Ball: A Chrome Soft X Golf Ball

The program has been running for 10 years and has been a vital commitment by the Kaiapoi Golf Club. Those that participated in some of the first years are now adults, unfortunately we all get older... Many of the junior members are single handicappers and have gone on to represent the Club, Canterbury and New Zealand. Special thanks to the many helpers and parents that contribute.
Dates are now set for our summer coaching programs.
Development Program. Starts: Monday October 16th Time: 4pm to 6pm This is a x10 week program leading up to Xmas. Those eligible are full junior members of the Club.
Beginner Program. Starts: Thursday 19th October Time: 6yrs and under 4pm to 4:30pm 7yrs to 9yrs 4:30pm to 5pm 10yr+ 5pm to 5:30pm This is a x6 week program. All equipment is provided at no charge. The program is open to all children wanting to give golf a go, just turn up on the day. Cost: $2.00 per session!
For all enquires on the junior program and what the Kaiapoi Golf Club can offer, give me a call. Good luck to our junior interclub teams competing in the Canterbury Foursomes series.
You've seen the shot tracker technology on the TV. The ball is tracked from the time it is struck to where it carries and finishes. This radar technology not only gives us vital ball flight information but also the club speed, path, angle of attack and face angle. Originally developed by the military for tracking missiles Flightscope and Trackman are the industry leaders in bringing this to the golf market. When your considering investing in new equipment this is the only way of maximising your investment. When you book a club fit you'll be able to compare different models, brands, heads and shafts to get the most out of your game. One of the comments I here a lot is "I feel like my swing isn't consistent enough to make any difference". Well I'm sure you'll be surprised to know that even with your current equipment your swing speed and characteristics will be very similar. The set make up is also very important and some of the questions you can ask yourself, How many irons, hybrids, fairway woods and wedges do I need to carry? Do I prefer hybrids over fairway woods? What lofts do I need in my wedges? Do I use a lob wedge? Graphite or steel shaft?
If your looking for more distance and consistency then give me a call and we can discuss how to improve your game. Good golfing Jason

Jhonattan Vegas from Venezuela caputured the RBC Canadian Open this past weekend with a closing round of 7 under, 65. The 32 year old jumps 30 spots in the world rankings to enter the top 50 for the first time at #48. Vegas who missed the cut in his previous 5 events is living proof of the fine line between the podium and not making the weekend.
I have been watching the career of Jhonattan closely over the past few years after meeting him in 2013. I was fortunate to attend the 2013 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, won by Tiger Woods. Jhonattan was one of many the top 100 players in the world practicing on the range during the event. People have always said about Tiger Woods ball striking, "It sounds different to everyone elses", well that's what I witnessed when standing next to Jhonattan. His ball flight was something different! Standing next to me on the range that day was his caddy and just behind us were his Mum and Dad. After striking up a conversation with his caddy I was able to meet with Jhonattan after his practice. On introducing myself and coming from NZ he instantly recalled another Kiwi he'd played a lot of golf with, Bradley Iles. He couldn't speak highly enough of Bradleys ability and fantastic ball striking, another reminder of the slim difference between playing on the Mini Tours and the big stage of the PGA Tour. In 2013 Jhonattan played just 3 events, missing the cut each time. He missed the remainder of the season having shoulder surgery. He know has 3 wins on the PGA Tour, The 2011 Bob Hope Classic and back to back wind at the Canadian Open.
How I can help you improve your game. Over the winter I've been working on a few new products to help my clients. Flightscope. Radar ball tracking technology that you probably know as shot tracker when watching golf on TV. This measures all your ball flight characteristics and is essential if you are considering new equipment. Give me a call and we can discuss the right equipment for your game.

What a weekend of golf, Jordan Spieth Champion Golf of the Year. What can we learn from Jordans game? How can you lower your score? The importance of the short game is no secret, and the focus of this post is, how I can really help you improve your putting. If you watch a Tour Player practice putting there are a couple of stand out features (other than the ball disappearing into the hole more often). 1. The quality of the strike. 2. The consistent speed control. 3. The pure roll (no skidding or bouncing) Lets assess your putting and get you rolling the ball into the hole like a Tour Player. I have started using a Bluetooth system that relays real time data about your putting stroke. Find out your: Path, Angle of Attack, Shaft lean at set up, and impact. We can achieve the ideal numbers through these potential changes, 1. Are you happy with your current putter? 2. Is it the right length? 3. Is the grip size correct? 4. Is a face balanced, or toe hang putter design right for you? 5. Hows your set up and ball position?
Are you having trouble escaping from bunkers? Book your next session and we'll cover not only Sand Shots but Lob Shots around the green. Get the basics right: 1. Technique 2. Equipment 3. Confidence
One Hour Session. Special $95.00. Give this as a Gift Voucher or use it yourself.
"Sure Out Wedge" Available Now! Get Out and Get Up and Down. With the Sure Out Wedge, Callaway engineers have created a new wedge that makes greenside shots – especially from sand and rough – incredibly easy to play. The problem I see with teaching a bunker shot is there are too many variations from a normal pitch shot to what you need to do to play a sand shot (open clubface, open stance, feet left of target, swing left...) These adjustments are mainly to get the club in a position where it will skim through the sand with more loft. The Sure Out wedge eliminates a lot of this, so come and give it a try.

Amelia Garvey -- 2017 New Zealand Stroke Play Champion
Hi I'm very pleased to pass on the news that Amelia won the NZ Stroke Play over the weekend. Played over 4 rounds at the Hastings Golf Club Amelia posted a 15 under par total, winning by 6 shots. Her tournament included a 2nd round course record 7 under par 67.
At 16 years old Amelia is a member of the Kaiapoi Golf Club. She started her golf at Kaiapoi at the age of 8 and I have been her coach since that time.
Amelia arrived in Hastings straight from the Asia Pacific Junior Faldo series final played in Vietnam. With both the age group and overall titles potentially in her grasp an indifferent final 9 saw her finish 2nd. Rounds of 74, 68,74.
Also within the past month Amelia took out the South Island Womens Strokeplay played at the St Clair Golf Club in Dunedin. Opening with rounds of 68, 68, 68 (18 under), Amelia took out the title by 12 shots.
This event cemented Amelia's naming in the NZ Queen Sirikit Cup Team. It will be her first senior team appearance for NZ and she'll be joined by Rose Zheng and Alana Campbell. The event involves 22 countries and will be played in China in early May.
2016 had many highlights. Winning the Muriwai Open, part of the Charles Tour. Also being named Eagles Young Golfer of the Year.

Amelia Garvey wins the 2017 New Zealand Stroke Play
Canterbury’s Amelia Garvey has produced a dominant display down the stretch to claim an authoritative victory in the New Zealand Women’s Stroke Play Championship at the Hastings Golf Club today. The 16-year-old showed an old head on her young shoulders when the pressure went on to etch her name into the Mellsop Cup. Despite finishing with a comfortable six shot victory over Chantelle Cassidy (Riverside Golf Club) it was anything but clear cut with four holes to play. Starting the back nine Garvey had a four-shot lead which Cassidy immediately started to eat into with a birdie on the 10th and after Garvey dropped shots on the 13th and 14th holes, Cassidy had reduced the deficit to only two. A wayward drive by Cassidy on 15 led to a bogey and Garvey pounced, rolling in a 3 metre birdie putt to return the margin to four. From there she went from strength to strength hitting it to a metre for an easy birdie on the par 3 16th, before using her length to make comfortable two putt birdies on the par five finishing holes for the biggest win of her young career. Garvey was beaming following her wire to wire win. “I was hitting a lot of fairways today and putting myself in good spots to attack the pins, which meant I didn’t have to do too much with my putter,” said Garvey “It was good to get a birdie on 15, Chantelle made bogey so it was a two-shot swing which was good after making back to back bogeys. I don’t really think I sealed it till the 16th when I put it close there.” When asked about the key to this week, Garvey was quick to pay credit to new found consistency.
Hi There. Congratulations to Rickie Fowler, winning last weeks Honda Classic. Here's what we can learn from what Rickie and many other Tour Pro's do. In this after impact position the right arm fully extends, just like shaking hands with the target. This is a reaction of squaring the clubface correctly through impact, note how the toe of the club is pointing straight up. If your bad shot is topping, catching a divot behind the ball or just not finishing properly? Practice swinging your right arm into this position, start without a club. You'll be hitting the ball more solid and further in no time!
On home soil. Congratulations to Amelia Garvey, winning the South Island Women's Strokeplay over the weekend. Played at the St Clair GC in Dunedin over 4 rounds Amelia opened with 3 rounds of 6 under 68! Giving her a 17 shot lead going into the final round. I've been Amelias coach since she started at age 8, now 16 and representing NZ its exciting to share in her success.
I have a full sized inflatable Driving Net available. This is ideal for corporate events (pictured here on the terrace at the Christchurch Golf Club). It works well for any number of people, can be used indoors (high ceiling required) or outside. Talk to me today about your next event.
Amelia Garvey tees it up in South Australia Junior Amateur

Welcome to the New Year! I would really like to help you reduce your score and enjoy the game even more and here is a great place to start. Not all golfers can stand on the tee and hit it 250m+. However, most golfers can knock it in the hole (at times) from anywhere on the green, particularly within 2m of the hole! So what you need to hole putts consistently is good mechanics and routine. A great drill (pictured) is to use a metal bar to putt along. This is a tough one at first but as you hit more putts and keep the ball on the bar you'll be improving: * Tempo * Stability (head and body) * Grip pressure * Metal approach Grip As you have seen on the Pro Tours, there are several ways to grip a putter but it’s important to take your wrists, fingers and hands out of the stroke. Gripping the club in the life lines so both palms face each other is a good way to take the smaller muscles out and reduce moving parts.
So what are you waiting for…book in a time with me and let’s get your scores heading downward.
Chris and I had a session prior to Xmas and this is what he sent me following his next round: "Jason just wanted to say a big thank you for the lesson. I had a good practice the next day and went and played the back nine today 5 over opposed to 18 over last week!! Felt so much better... Thanks again and looking forward to working with you this year

This year I've had the privilege of meeting some medalists. The silver Olympic medal from Rio belongs to one of our womens sevens players ( this is not Lydia Ko's). The Special Olympics medal belongs to Keiran, a member of our local golf group. He competed recently at the Regional Games in Nelson. I catch up with this group most weeks at the Kaiapoi Golf Club for a practice session and a few holes on the course. Congratulations also to Tom Walsh a member of the Christchurch Golf Club.
For your next gift I have a full range of coaching services available to fit any budget. Vouchers can be sent to you or picked up from the Christchurch Golf Club. Talk to me today about your requirements.
I have a full sized inflatable Driving Net available. This is ideal for corporate events (pictured here on the terrace at the Christchurch Golf Club). It works well for any number of people, can be used indoors (high ceiling required) or outside. Talk to me today about your next event.
During November we ran a She Loves Golf Program. We had a fantastic group of ladies who enjoyed a 3 session program on the basics of golf. We covered everything from a few of the fundamentals, driving a golf cart, on course play and enjoying some hospitality in the new Christchurch Golf Club clubhouse. Thanks to all players, committee and Club staff who contributed
